UPDATED – Help Identify: 1956 Photo Of Unknown RCMP Member
Veteran Ric Hall sent us the following information and is seeking to identify the unknown RCMP member. Photograph was taken in 1956 in Vancouver, B.C.
Many of us growing up in Vancouver can remember walking down Granville Street, when it was a family outing, and having your picture taken by a guy on the street and as you passed you were handed a ticket stub to pick up your street photo the next day. Those thousands of pictures taken by Foncie Pulice have now become a part of the history of Vancouver. Checking my own family albums there are several of these street photos of my family members, from the 1930s through to the 1960s.
While scrolling through the web site of his photographs I found this picture of a member, taken in 1956, the notation attached to the picture is:
This picture was taken during a trip to Vancouver from Prince George on RCMP ‘escort’. The big lights of Vancouver were overwhelming to this young, fresh-from-the-Prairies constable. Usually the members of The Force stayed at Fairmont Barracks but at this time there was a course in session and that left ‘no room at the Inn’. The night was spent at the Hotel Vancouver, way over budget, but what did this young fellow know. His nickname, coincidentally was ‘Clancy.’.
UPDATE – Ric has received information from RCMP VeteranJim Ackison who outlined – “member in the picture is Clare Mealing. He was probably on escort from Prince George. Clare was a drill instructor in Depot and I met him in Dauphin when he came to “D” Division. He retired from Minedossa to an Okanagan orchard and now lives in Oliver.”
