Vancouver Maritime Museum – Schedule of Events

RCMP Henry Larsen - Vancouver Maritime Museum

With the low exchange rate of the Canadian dollar compared to that of the United States dollar, Canadians should consider exploring and learning more about our own proud history.

One such place is the Vancouver Maritime Museum.

Beside the RCMP St. Roch and its historical artifacts, there are some other activities taking place this summer at the Museum.

Two such topics of interest are outlined below.

Traveling VMM Exhibit To Follow In The Footsteps Of The Early Arctic Explorers?

This summer the Vancouver Maritime Museum is returning to the Arctic in an exciting new partnership with One Ocean Expeditions to bring to the North the Museum’s exhibit Across the Top of the World: the Quest for the Northwest Passage.

The exhibit will create a floating museum for one year on board One Ocean Voyager Akademik Sergey Vavilov, the same ship that supported Parks Canada and Royal Canadian Geographical Society in the Victoria Strait Expedition 2014, successfully locating Franklin’s ship HMS Erebus.

Following in the footsteps of the early Arctic explorers such as Franklin, Amundsen and Larsen, this exhibit tells their stories of adventure and discovery as it sails through the breathtaking Northwest Passage and is immersed back in the North.

On this first voyage the exhibit will stop off at the arctic communities of Pond Inlet and Cambridge Bay where it will come ashore and be displayed to the public, with more communities to be visited in the coming year. – READ MORE

New Polar Medal To Feature RCMP’s St. Roch

Canada: New Polar Medal

The creation of the Polar Medal emphasizes the importance that our country places on strengthening our understanding of and connection to the North.” Said the Governor General in a statement released last Wednesday.

Here at the Vancouver Maritime Museum we are especially excited by the news as a representation of the RCMP Schooner St. Roch has been chosen to appear on the Medal. In fact the announcement was made 75 years after the St. Roch left on her mission to travel from the Western Arctic to the Eastern Arctic. – READ MORE
